The SICK Absolute Encoder Purchase That Made Me Rethink My Entire TCO Spreadsheet

In January 2024, my daughter was sick with a fever, so the thermometer was already on the kitchen table. Its only job was to show me the fever temperature, and I needed it to be accurate. Between temperature checks, I was buried in quotes for an absolute encoder. Different tools, same problem.

Unit price is just the entry ticket.

Three things I'd tell anyone in a similar position:

First, put calibration consumables on the same purchase order as the meter. Second, ask how support is delivered before you ask how much the product costs. Third, trust the tool that has proven itself, not the one that is simply cheap. I've added a budget line called 'things that make the equipment trustworthy.' It's not a SKU, but it's the cheapest insurance we buy.
